Live-Action Gundam Movie Wraps Filming as New Earth Federation Set Photos Surface
Netflix’s live-action Gundam movie has reportedly completed principal photography, marking an important milestone for the first major live-action feature based on the legendary Gundam franchise.
Production began in Queensland, Australia, in April 2026 under the working title Teardrop. Filming was primarily based at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, with additional location work conducted in Brisbane and Toowoomba. A wrap party reportedly took place in mid-July, with confirmation that filming had concluded surfacing on July 21.
The film is written and directed by Jim Mickle, best known for developing Netflix’s Sweet Tooth. Legendary Pictures is producing the project in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks, with Netflix handling its release. The story will be an original within the Gundam world.
Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo will lead the movie as rival mobile-suit pilots fighting on opposite sides of a decades-long conflict between Earth and its former space colonies. Shifting allegiances and the emergence of a larger threat will eventually force the two pilots into a race across space that could determine humanity’s future.The supporting cast includes Jackson White, Shioli Kutsuna, Nonso Anozie, Michael Mando, Javon “Wanna” Walton, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Ida Brooke, Gemma Chua-Tran and Jason Isaacs. Character names and specific roles have not yet been revealed.
Although the premise has drawn comparisons to Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team because of its opposing pilots and apparent romantic conflict, Netflix has described the movie as an original and accessible story rather than a direct adaptation of an existing Gundam series.
Alongside news that filming had concluded, What’s on Netflix published a large collection of unofficial behind-the-scenes photographs credited to BACKGRID. These images provide the most extensive look so far at the movie’s version of the Earth Federation Forces. The photographs show Federation officers wearing dark-blue dress uniforms with red collars, cuffs and shoulder accents. The overall design preserves the recognizable blue-and-red color scheme associated with several Universal Century Federation uniforms while adapting it into a more grounded military style.
The photographs also reveal an extensive collection of Earth Federation vehicles. Several armored transports and utility trucks are painted in a muted blue-gray color and marked with “EFF” and “Earth Federation Forces.”
