Live-Action Gundam Movie Confirmed to Be Set in the Universal Century

The upcoming live-action Gundam movie has finally answered one of the biggest questions fans have had since the project was first announced: the film will take place in the Universal Century timeline.

Actor Noah Centineo, who stars in the movie alongside Sydney Sweeney, revealed the detail while appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. While discussing the film, Centineo stated that it “lives in the Universal Century canon of Gundam.”

That is a major confirmation for Gundam fans!

The Universal Century, or U.C., is the original Gundam timeline that began with 1979’s Mobile Suit Gundam. It is home to some of the franchise’s most famous stories, including Zeta Gundam, Char’s Counterattack, Gundam Unicorn, Hathaway, and many others.

However, we still don’t know when in the Universal Century the movie takes place.

There has been no confirmation that the story happens during the One Year War, nor do we know if other familiar factions such as the Principality of Zeon will appear.

The movie is expected to tell a new story centered around characters caught on opposing sides of a conflict between Earth and its space colonies. Centineo has even described the film as somewhat of a “Romeo and Juliet in space,” suggesting that the relationship between its main characters could become a major part of the story.

Will characters like Amuro Ray or Char Aznable appear?

Right now, there is no confirmation of that.

The movie could instead follow completely original characters living within the Universal Century, similar to how series such as The 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket explored smaller stories happening alongside larger events.

Production on the movie has already wrapped, with the film currently moving through post-production. An official release date has not yet been announced.
